Antonio Conte admits he was puzzled by Manchester United’s inability to get the best out of Scott McTominay before his move to Napoli.

McTominay had been with United’s academy since the age of five but the club opted to sell the midfielder in a £25.7 million deal to Napoli last year.

The 28-year-old made an immediate impact in Italy as he played a pivotal role in Napoli’s Serie A title success and was voted as the division’s player of the year.

During his time in United’s first-team, McTominay struggled to find his best position in midfield but Conte insists the Scotland international had all the attributes to become a success.

‘I knew him when he played with Manchester United because I coached two times in England,’ Conte said.
