ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — It's no secret that the City of Athens is growing. In fact, Limestone County is the fastest-growing county in the state of Alabama.

Now, the Mayor says the city is preparing for a population boom.

"Athens is booming, it's full of energy," Mayor Ronnie Marks told News 19.

He said the city has already approved 4,400 new housing units, with more projects in the works.

"We're moving a lot of dirt, there's a lot of opportunities and there's a lot more to come," Marks said.

He told News 19 that the latest population estimate is around 33,000, which is a number that he expects will keep on climbing.

"You know, you've got 4,000 housing units, you put two people in each, you've got a population increase of close to 8,000 to 10,000 people in the next few years," Marks sai
