(WJET/WFXP) – The first successful daily newspaper published in the United States was founded in Pennsylvania.

Founded by John Dunlap in 1771, the Pennsylvania Packet and General Advertiser started as a weekly paper and provided unprecedented views of Colonial America.

The paper was based in Philadelphia. However, it was briefly printed in Lancaster during the British Occupation of Philadelphia from 1777 to 1778.

In 1784, David C. Claypoole partnered with Dunlap, and the paper was renamed the Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser to reflect the move to daily publication, marking it as the first daily newspaper in the United States.
