Queensland police have charged a man over a shooting in the state's far north.

Frenchville man John Durham Willey was taken into custody late on Wednesday night by specialist officers after a large-scale manhunt in central Queensland .

It is alleged the 42-year-old fled after the vehicle he was travelling in crashed on the Bruce Highway on Tuesday, 50 kilometres north of Rockhampton.

A search of the vehicle by detectives uncovered two firearms, and five more were found in a golf bag dumped nearby.

Police allege Mr Willey attended a hotel at Manunda in Cairns on September 9 with a firearm and shot a 45-year-old man in the leg before leaving the scene.

Police said Mr Willey, who was residing in Cairns, was travelling in a Holden Crewman ute with 47-year-old Cooktown woman Kate Pendl
