CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A contract dispute has stretched on for nearly a month for a Metro East school district and its teachers.

Cahokia Federation of Teachers said Wednesday was day 24 of working without a contract, not just for teachers but also for secretaries and service workers in the Cahokia Unit School District 187. It impacts hundreds of employees.

“It’s about basics for us,” said Cahokia Federation of Teachers President Wendy Lochmann. Lochmann is also a teacher in the district. “We feel that we need competitive wages, something that keeps pace with our peers. We need greater student access. A fair working agreement, one that respects the work that we do.”

Lochmann said the previous contract expired this summer, and it’s been slow going to get a new one done.
