In 2012, Tulsa was lucky to land an evening with Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, 40 years after they broke the Watergate story that cost Richard Nixon the presidency.

Before the reporting legends talked at a packed event at the University of Tulsa, they came by the newsroom to meet with the staff and take questions. It was surreal.

They outlined, from their reporting, what was really going on that you might not remember. As reporter Kevin Canfield wrote at the time , Woodward and Bernstein said the Watergate break-in was the start of one of five wars Nixon waged during — and even before — his presidency. Those targeted the Democratic Party, the anti-Vietnam War movement, the press, the U.S. justice system and history itself.
