The federal government's goal to cut carbon emissions by at least 62 per cent of 2005 levels by 2035 was swiftly condemned by climate groups and the opposition, with experts arguing it will not be high enough to stave off the impacts of climate change.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen announced the government's target of 62 to 70 per cent after a national risk assessment warned of an increase in extreme weather days as a result of global warming.

"This is a responsible target supported by science and a practical plan to get there and built on proven technology," Mr Albanese told reporters on Thursday.

"It is the right target to protect our environment, to protect and advance our economy and jobs and to ensure that we act in our national interes
