A recent Gallup poll attracted much attention when it reported that consumption of alcohol has dropped to approximately 54% of the American public, its lowest level in over 90 years. That’s down from at least 60% in years 1997 to 2003 and way down from the years 1974 to 1981, when alcohol consumption was at an all-time high, between 68% to 71% of the population (an unintended byproduct of the Nixon presidency?).

The poll attributes the decline to the public’s belief, backed up by scientific research, that even moderate drinking — one to two drinks a day — is harmful to one’s health.
