Activists and at least two Indianapolis City-County Council members say they'll object to the sheriff's budget so long as he's housing ICE detainees ahead of an Oct. 6 final vote.

While the sheriff said he's bound by state law to work with ICE, the IMPD chief says his agency won't aid in federal immigration sweeps or other new efforts.

The sheriff's office's work with ICE has expanded dramatically this year as part of Trump's deportation efforts.

The Marion County sheriff is asking city attorneys whether he could legally end an agreement to house immigrants mired in federal deportation efforts, amid threats from some Indianapolis City-County Council members to vote down the sheriff's budget if the agency keeps participating.
