Contest establishes Hy-Vee name
What may be Iowa's most famous rebrand was the result of a contest.
Charles Hyde and Dwight Vredenburg founded what became Hy-Vee in 1930 and in 1938 incorporated 15 Iowa and Missouri grocery stores as Hyde & Vredenburg Inc. But until 1952 the company's stores operated without standard names. They were designated "'Supply Store” or “Service Store," preceded by the name of the town they served, according to the company's website .
