Windridge Vineyards is a Maryland Wineries Association Governor’s Cup winner for the first time.

The results were announced on Sept. 12, one day before the Maryland Wine Festival took place.

Windridge is located in Darnestown, in Maryland’s Montgomery County, about 25 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and around 50 miles southwest of Baltimore.

Farmed by the Butz family since 1959, the owners planted their first vineyard, one of three, in 2011 and produced their first port-style wine vintage in 2015. They opened their tasting room to guests in a temporary structure four years later, and then turned the key on a permanent building in the summer of 2020.

The winery is open Wednesdays through Sundays.

It earned the Governor’s Cup for its 2022 Cabernet Franc, one of two double golds
