CHICAGO (WGN) — A suspect was hospitalized after Chicago police say he was shot by an off-duty suburban police officer following an alleged armed confrontation on the city's South Side overnight.

A suspect was hospitalized overnight following an alleged armed confrontation involving an off-duty suburban police officer on the city's South Side.

According to the Chicago police, the incident unfolded just after 9 p.m. in the 7300 block of South Langley Avenue in Greater Grand Crossing.

Officers say the victim, a 64-year-old off-duty police officer from the Broadview Police Department, was approached by a man who was allegedly armed with a knife as he got out of his car, which he had parked in an alley in the area.
