Actor and music artist Sheb Wooley will be posthumously inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame .
Wooley’s induction will take place at an 8 p.m. Sept. 27 ceremony during the Purple People Eater Festival in Erick, Oklahoma, Wooley’s hometown.
Born in Erick in 1921, Wooley wrote and recorded the novelty song “ The Purple People Eater ,” which became a No. 1 hit in 1958. He also had a No. 1 country hit, “ That’s My Pa ,” in 1962.
In addition to being a cast member of the television series “ Rawhide ,” Wooley has an extensive filmography that includes “High Noon,” “Hoosiers” and “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” He also is known for being the voice behind the famed Wilhelm Scream audio effect.
