A Senate hearing today will address new data showing that students are struggling with math and reading, with experts citing increased screen time, shortened attention spans, absenteeism, and the pandemic as contributing factors.

The Nation's Report Card reveals that 12th graders are leaving high school with the lowest levels of math and reading scores in more than 20 years. In reading, the average score from 2020 to 2024 was the lowest in the history of the assessment, which began in 1992. The report also found that eighth grade students are falling behind in science.
