SHELBYVILLE, Ind. — A mother is facing a preliminary neglect charge for her alleged role in the death of her toddler.

Shelbyville police officers responded to a report of an unresponsive child around 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 in the 900 block of Hale Road , near Miller Avenue and Colescott Street.

Officers arrived and found the mother and her 22-month-old child, who was lying in the driveway. Officers tried to provide medical assistance to the child, but officers quickly determined the child was dead.

An autopsy will determine the toddler's cause of death.
