Confusion continues to linger after last week’s Sept. 9 meeting of the East Providence School Committee, which generated heated discussion regarding a city-controlled account that was created for the purpose of financing capital projects for schools across the city.
One source of frustration for some on the committee (which has since been resolved) concerned the fund supposedly not being available to the schools for its use, despite it being set up for months. This, the committee learned during its meeting, had forced the school department to spend over $570,000 from their emergency cash reserves to pay over a dozen outstanding bills for various capital projects that should have been eligible to be funded by the capital account.
