NEWARK - A major commitment to improving water quality for Newark and North Jersey residents has been made with $20.5 million in upgrades at the Newark-Pequannock Water Treatment Plant.

The investment in the state-of-the-art facility includes filter replacements and a new system to control, operate and monitor water quality.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, along with Newark Water & Sewer Utilities Director Kareem Adeem and other officials, cut the ribbon to celebrate the completion of the water treatment plant’s upgrades on Wednesday morning.

The Pequannock Water Treatment Plant is located in West Milford just east of the Charlotteburg Reservoir, the largest of the five reservoirs that service Newark. It supplies clean drinking water to almost 400,000 residents in the North Jersey region
