Tiverton police and fire fighters safely detonated an armor piercing shell Wednesday morning, after a Riverside Drive resident found a suspicious item in the garage and called police.
Police originally called to the scene evacuated nearby residents as a precaution and called in the state fire marshal's office and the United States Navy's Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, based out of Newport. The device, about 3.75 inches, was identified through an x-ray unit brought to the scene by the EOD.
The shell was safely removed from the home and brought off-site, where it was remotely detonated without incident, police said.
