Mixed reactions started rolling in after President Donald Trump held a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the U.K. Thursday.
Trump and Starmer responded to British press questions about the relationship between the two countries, including the AI and technology partnership, Russia's attacks and the ongoing war in Ukraine, war and genocide in Gaza, tariffs and oil prices, Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and the ousted former Ambassador Peter Mandelson — who Trump claims he doesn't know despite a photo showing them chatting in the Oval Office several months ago. He also said Jimmy Kimmel was fired over ratings.
Users on X and Bluesky responded to the Trump's remarks and Starmer's responses.
"Starmer has pulled out all the stops to flatter and impress Trump, but still hasn’t managed to get him to drop his damaging tariffs, take on Putin or tell Netanyahu to stop waging genocide. It’s time for the UK to stand tough with allies who share our values," Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, wrote on X.
"I'm not sure that reporting on Trump in the old-fashioned way makes any sense. You need to really prefix everything with, 'In a rambling, off-the-cuff speech that he may well contradict tomorrow...'" writer Rick Burin wrote on Bluesky.
"I’d love for the UK to disassociate from Trump & the US. They’re unreliable partners; Trump, utterly morally bankrupt, always will be. For now, sadly, we need them onside: Ukraine has, since Feb 2022, been WWIII in everything but name. We can’t – yet – fight Russia (& China? India?) without the US," writer John Manning wrote via Bluesky.
"After encouragement from Starmer, the British Govt fell for the huge expense of entertaining Trump. Maybe they get a stay on tariffs but rolling out the red carpet won’t make either one of them popular in the UK. This should be Starmer’s last hurrah," a user named Carrie wrote on Bluesky.
"I am noting on President Trump’s UK visit, the most the significant conversations, beyond significant pledged investment bringing in business to engage in diplomacy and dealmaking, is the tech partnership and AI discussions between the US and UK. I am guessing this is being talked about today between President Trump and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This was a topic of the original visit by Starmer to the US months ago and missed by press-it was my question at the time, what will this AI/tech race partnership look like? Who will engage in joint innovation and how? And how will the US and UK align on AI development freedom, ethics, free speech and privacy laws to satisfy the goal of joint innovation?" journalist Kate Jones asked via X.
"BBG: Trump says Jimmy Kimmel was fired for 'lack of talent' and bad ratings - 'not free speech' at the UK presser that just wrapped. This is bulls---- on so many levels I don't know where to begin..." another user wrote on Bluesky.
