MARTIN CO. – The Martin County Commissioners have declared a local state of emergency and issued a countywide burn ban, effective immediately.

Neighboring counties also currently under burn bans include Dubois, Orange, Spencer, Sullivan, and Washington.

The burn bans are in response to a heightened risk of fire due to dry conditions.

The ban prohibits all forms of open burning, including:

Campfires, unless they are contained within approved fire rings.

Open burning of debris.

The use of burn barrels.

While charcoal and propane grills are still permitted, officials urge extreme caution. Any charcoal used must be completely extinguished before being disposed of. Residents are also being asked to avoid using aerial fireworks.

The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice.
