N.Y. (WETM) -- The New York State Police has announced the launch of its new Autism Awareness Visor Card Program, which seeks to assist both law enforcement and those on the autism spectrum with communication during a traffic stop.
Challenges that those with autism face, such as communication differences, sensory sensitivities and difficulties with social interaction, can pose a communication barrier that makes it harder for them to understand instructions, provide requested information or respond appropriately to law enforcement during a traffic stop. These challenges can cause misunderstandings between law enforcement and the individual involved.
