WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — In the halls of West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School , students describe Craig Shaeffer as a fun and engaging English teacher who guides them through Shakespeare, film lit and creative writing assignments.

“He’s my favorite!” exclaimed one of his students.

“You can tell he’s passionate about teaching,” added another.

But after the school bell rings and the students leave, Mr. Shaeffer transforms into someone else entirely. Instead of teaching about books, he’s writing them.

“I go by Jonathan Janz,” he said – as in Jonathan Janz – the nationally recognized horror fiction author. Like his latest novel, his is a story of two worlds.

Shaeffer has been balancing both worlds for a little more than a decade now, and he sees them not as conflicting but complementary
