PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia — A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near the east coast of Russia’s Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported .
The strong quake prompted tsunami advisories for Russia, Hawaii and "some coasts," according to the NWS tsunami warning system. Tsunami waves between one to three meters above tide level were possible for some coasts of Russia.
"A tsunami threat exists for parts of the pacific located closer to the earthquake but it is still too early to determine whether there is a possible tsunami threat to Hawaii," a warning sent out by NWS said.
There was a tsunami advisory issued for Western Aleutians, Alaska.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damages.
