SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) -- A handyman in Troup was arrested for stealing thousands of dollars' worth of jewelry from an elderly woman's home while he was working there.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office said an elderly woman reported that a handyman may have stolen thousands of dollars' worth of jewelry from her home.

She mentioned that during one visit, the handyman spent an unusually long time in her bedroom and checked her jewelry box, after which she discovered several items were missing.

Investigators located most of the stolen jewelry and identified the suspect as 53-year-old Christopher McDowell of Troup.

On Wednesday at around 10:45 p.m., McDowell was arrested by the Troup Police Department and taken to the Smith County Jail.
