PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia — A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near the east coast of Russia’s Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported .
The strong quake prompted tsunami advisories for Russia, Hawaii and "some coasts," according to the NWS tsunami warning system. Tsunami waves between one to three meters above tide level were possible for some coasts of Russia.
A tsunami advisory was issued for Western Aleutians, Alaska but has since been removed. NWS cleared the tsunami threat alert to coastal Russia a few hours after the earthquake struck.
"There is no risk for a destructive tsunami anywhere along the U.S. West or Canadian Coastline," the NWS said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damages.
