Gary Faigin, co-founder and artistic director of Seattle’s Gage Academy of Art, and a consummate painter, teacher, author and critic, died Sept. 6 from prostate cancer at age 74. Known for his infectious enthusiasm for art, Faigin had a prolific career and was a beacon of artistic knowledge.
A proponent of realist painting — characterized by subjects from everyday life, depicted naturalistically — Faigin has had solo and group exhibitions at the Frye Art Museum, Linda Hodges Gallery and Woodside/Braseth Gallery. Faigin served as KUOW’s resident art critic from 2000 to 2012, and was a founding board member at Cascadia Art Museum in Edmonds; he also occasionally freelanced for The Seattle Times.
