CANTON ‒ Criminal charges have been dropped against a Canton man involved in a fatal shooting at a barbershop.

A Stark County grand jury declined to indict Deontae K.V. McCollum, 25, on murder and felonious assault charges tied to the Aug. 1 slaying of Braylan E. Foster , 19, at Klipz Barber Shop, 2543 Mahoning Road NE.

"After carefully considering the facts and evidence available, the grand jury determined that an indictment was not warranted at this time," Stark County Prosecutor Kyle Stone said in a prepared statement.

A police officer who spoke with McCollum over the phone following the incident said the defendant alluded to the shooting having occurred in self-defense, as did his mother Dewanna McCain.
