The governor of Russia's Kamchatka region says a tsunami warning has been issued for the area off the east coast of the peninsula after an earthquake measuring 7.2 was recorded.
Vladimir Solodov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said residents were being warned of the danger but there had been no reports of damage.
The US tsunami warning system said it had issued no warning of threat of a tsunami in the aftermath of the quake.
The US Geological Survey said the quake was measured at 7.8.
Australian seismologists registered an undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.7 and the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.
