FORT VALLEY, Ga. — A man has been arrested in a fatal Fort Valley hit and run from July, according to a press release from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).

The GSP says Javeus Montgomery, 23, has been arrested and charged in a hit and run which left 65-year-old James Oates dead in Fort Valley on July 23, 2025.

The press release says Georgia authorities responded to a report of a pedestrian accident on July 23 around 2:00 a.m.

GSP troopers responded to the scene and found Oats dead on the scene, where they also recovered headlight cover fragments and paint chips, per the release. That led them to suspect the vehicle involved was a charcoal gray 2003-2007 Honda Accord.
