AUSTIN, Texas — After more than 60 years on the airwaves, Austin’s public radio stations KUT and KUTX are working to bounce back from a significant financial blow.
The stations are facing the loss of $1.2 million in annual federal funding following recent congressional cuts.
The rollback, which came as part legislation passed by lawmakers in July, rescinded over $1 billion in funds previously given to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The CPB distributes grants to more than 1,500 public radio and television stations nationwide, including KUT and KUTX.
Debbie Hiott, the general manager of KUT and KUTX, said the budget cut represents about 6% of the stations’ annual budget. While it might not sound like a large number, she says it's enough to cut deep.
Hiott warned that without fi
