Sean Bell will become a senator for NSW in a historic vote following the resignation of One Nation senator Warwick Stacey.
Mr Stacey, a veteran, was elected to the senate following the 2025 federal election, but resigned due to health reasons in August.
His replacement Mr Bell, a long-time staffer of One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, was selected by the party and the NSW Parliament had to nominate and approve the appointment.
As One Nation has no representation at the NSW parliament, Libertarian MLC John Ruddick moved the nomination.
He was appointed following a joint sitting of the houses of NSW parliament on Thursday, despite stiff opposition from former Labor leader Mark Latham.
Mr Latham repeatedly claimed during the hour-long sitting Mr Bell was a resident of Queensland.
