THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV)—As WCTV celebrates its 70th anniversary, here’s a look at the station’s true start and its impact in Thomasville, Georgia.

70 years ago in the heart of Thomasville, Georgia, a news station was born, but the process wasn’t easy.

Ephraim Rotter, a historian with the Thomasville History Center, broke down how WCTV got its start.

“Ed Rivers goes and he gets licensed for a Channel 6 in Thomasville, got approved by the FCC,” he explained. “And it took a lot of money back then to start a television station and he never got the ball rolling on it.”

Channel 6 was just an idea at first, until a well-known businessman, John H. Phipps came along with a vision and a plan.
