TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Ocala state Rep. Ryan Chamberlin announced his plan to reduce and eventually eliminate property taxes called "Freedom 1,2,3."
The idea started after homeowners complained about rising property taxes and Gov. Ron DeSantis started urging lawmakers to provide relief.
"In the last four or five years or so, property taxes across the state of Florida have gone up 45% to almost 50% statewide. Some counties as high as 87%,” Chamberlin said.
Chamberlin said counties likely also saw a dramatic increase from inflation.
“Counties were not expecting that kind of increase, yet they've managed to spend every dime that's coming in,” Chamberlin said.
The three-stage proposal starts with counties going back to the 2022-2023 property tax levels, if lawmakers approve.
