MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Republicans held a "welcome party" as they wait for the National Guard's deployment to Memphis.

Supporters are encouraged to bring “flags, signs, and Memphis swag to show the country that Shelby County thanks President Trump and Governor Bill Lee for sending the National Guard to Memphis!”

However, some Memphis city council members and activist organizations are moving to put a stop to them coming to the city after holding a press conference Thursday morning at City Hall.

Two unscientific polls run by WREG have shown broad public support for National Guard deployment in the city to bring down crime numbers, with more than 80% of respondents saying “Bring ’em on,” compared to less than 20% saying “Keep ’em out.”
