LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A Georgia man was arrested Thursday after allegedly stealing someone’s identity in an attempt to purchase nearly $300,000 in gold from a Lincoln shop earlier this year.
According to court documents, Lincoln Police were called to Lincoln Coin & Bullion on March 4 for a forgery report. An employee told officers that on March 3, a man identifying himself as Steven Mills attempted to pass a forged check.
Investigators said 70-year-old Bobby Hammett entered the shop that day and requested to purchase 96 ounces of gold, valued at $285,148.73. The employee told him all of the metals were available immediately, except for a 1-kilogram gold bar.
When asked for his name, Hammett reportedly said he was Mills and filled out a Truist Bank check with Mills’ information. Officer
