GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — More than 300,000 Michiganders are receiving notices that they owe pandemic-era money to the Unemployment Insurance Agency.

The state says billions of dollars were overpaid.

West Michigan resident Marie Hosep faced unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later faced a repayment order back to the Michigan Unemployment Insurance agency, costing her thousands of dollars.

“I believe it was between four and five thousand dollars that they said was going to need to be paid back," Hosep said. "I started making payments, and it was like four hundred a month. And on top of your regular bills, when you work part-time jobs and you're 20, that was a lot of money.”
