A 39-year-old Caltrans engineer died Thursday near Martinez after being hit by an asphalt truck during construction work on state Highway 4 in Contra Costa County, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced. Mahdi Khorram died after being hit in an area of the highway closed for construction. He was assigned to the project as a construction inspector based out of Caltrans’ District 4 office in Concord, according to the governor’s office. “An employee since 2023, Mahdi was a dedicated public servant committed to making our roads safer for all Californians,” Newsom said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues mourning this terrible tragedy.” Mahdi is survived by his wife and 3-year-old child.
