MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -The new jail communications contract failed to pass during the Dane County board meeting on Thursday night.

The vote focused on changing the company used for jail residents to communicate with their families.

The vote failed with the majority of the board against the proposed contract. The almost hour-long discussion unveiled concerns county supervisors had with the new contractor, Smart Communications Holding Inc., which is based out of Florida.

If it was passed, it would have been at least a three year contract and would save jail inmates more than $100 a month.

Since the vote failed, families will continue to pay to communicate with their loved ones in jail. It also means the county will stick with the same company they have been utilizing for years.
