A motorcyclist was killed in what the Roanoke Police Department described as “a major crash” on

Wednesday evening.

Police responded at around 5:34 p.m. to the 4800 block of Melrose Avenue Northwest for a report of a collision involving a truck and a motorcycle.

That block is on a stretch of U.S. 460 between Peters Creek Road and Electric Road just east of Salem. The road has two lanes each way and a grassy median separating the directions.

The man driving the motorcycle was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, police said. The department announced his death about an hour after responding to the crash.

The 4800 block of Melrose Avenue Northwest was reopened Wednesday night.
