Dolphins' Jonnu Smith trade mistake has NFL observers very confused

It didn't make a ton of sense at the time.

It still doesn't make much sense now.

Why did the Miami Dolphins trade Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers ?

It can't be simply because they could "replace him" with a back-from-retirement Darren Waller (who has been too injured to play at all so far).

And while they got draft ammunition in return, that doesn't seem a great reason, either. The Dolphins have invested heavily in QB Tua Tagovailoa, and they still have star WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Smith does them more good on the team than on someone else's roster.
