Brett James, a Grammy-winning songwriter and a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, was killed in plane crash Thursday near Franklin, North Carolina.

Fox 17 reported that the small plane that James was traveling in went down near a middle school in Macon County.

“A Cirrus SR22T crashed in a field in Franklin, North Carolina, around 3 p.m. local time on Thursday, Sept. 18,” the FAA shared in a statement. “Three people were on board. THE FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide further updates.”

Fox 17 reported that the plane’s tail number was N218VB and that it was registered to James out of Brentwood, Tennessee. The station said the plane took off out of John C Tune Airport in Nashvil
