Famous US burger chain Wendy’s is to open in Plymouth’s Drake Circus Shopping Centre. The brand, renowned for its square hamburgers, will open in the upper mall, in a space vacated when SpudULike pulled out a year ago.

The opening will mark Wendy’s first restaurant in the South West and will create 40 jobs. Last year, executives said they were targeting the region and looking at Plymouth and Exeter as part of an expansion plan.

A hoarding bearing the Wendy’s logo and the words “coming soon” and “loved in America since 1969” has gone up in the upper mall space. Bosses at Drake Circus mall excitedly asked on social media: “Is Plymouth ready for the famous square burger?”

And they said: “The announcements keep coming here at Drake Circus, with the latest new restaurant Wendy’s arriving
