OWENSBORO, Ky. — A surge in serious collisions on the U.S. 60 bypass has prompted Daviess County officials to intensify traffic patrols and analyze years of crash data to curb speeding and fatalities along the busy corridor.
Sheriff Brad Youngman said his office has redirected federal highway safety grant funds to hire off-duty deputies for overtime enforcement "blitzes," resulting in about 60 citations over a recent three-day period.
The push follows a string of dangerous wrecks over the past year, including a fatal crash that has heightened community alarm.
"We've had a large number of fairly serious traffic collisions on our U.S. 60 bypass," Youngman said. "The result of that has been a lot of concern from the community, also a lot of concern from us out here at the sheriff's office.
