Tropical Storm Gabrielle is likely to become the second hurricane of the 2025 season over the Atlantic Ocean this weekend.

Gabrielle is forecast to strengthen in the next 36 hours as the westerly wind shear and dry air that have been dampening its development are projected to gradually lessen, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 7 a.m. Friday.

Gabrielle was about 595 east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands Friday morning, with maximum winds of 50 mph and heading west-northwest at 12 mph.

The NHC's latest forecast track shows Gabrielle becoming a Category 1 hurricane by 2 p.m. Sunday. It is not expected to impact Louisiana.
