The American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin is asking the state Supreme Court to rule that it's illegal for local jails to hold immigrant detainees at federal authorities' request.

Those requests, known as detainers, are sent by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to local sheriff's offices. On behalf of the Milwaukee immigrant advocacy group Voces de la Frontera, the ACLU of Wisconsin filed a lawsuit against five Wisconsin sheriffs who honor those requests from ICE.

The sheriffs are Dave Gerber of Walworth County, Todd Delain of Brown County, Chad Billeb of Marathon County, David Zoerner of Kenosha County and Chip Meister of Sauk County.
