Brett James, one of the songwriters behind Carrie Underwood’s hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” has died. James and two others were killed in a plane crash Thursday in North Carolina, according to CNN .

The Grammy-winning songwriter was traveling in a small-engine aircraft when it crashed into a field around 3 p.m. local time. The plane departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville and crashed about 270 miles southeast of the airport.

James, 57, worked with several of music’s top stars, including Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, and of course Underwood. In 2007, James won his only Grammy for “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” James has more than 500 songs appear on albums that have sold more than 110 million copies, according to CNN.
