U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by telephone Friday morning as Mr. Trump sought to close a deal to sell TikTok amid the ongoing trade war between the two countries.

According to the White House, Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi began the call at 8 a.m. ET, though it’s not clear how long they spoke. Mr. Trump is expected to provide updates via Truth Social, the White House said.

He is seeking to avoid a congressional ban on TikTok, a video platform that is wildly popular with young people, by having its Chinese owner, ByteDance, sell it to an American buyer.
