A divided House of Representatives passed a resolution Friday honoring the life of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, who was killed last week at a speaking event at a Utah university.
Kirk’s killing has ignited an increase in tensions between Republican and Democratic lawmakers. While leaders of both parties have universally condemned political violence, Democrats have been less eager to posthumously praise the right-wing influencer given his past controversial comments, including mention of “prowling Blacks” who violently target white people.
On the House floor, the resolution was ultimately adopted with a vote of 310-58, with 215 Republicans and 94 Democrats voting in favor, and 58 Democrats voting against the measure.
The mention of Kirk had previously sparked shouting on the House floor last week after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) asked the body to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of Kirk.
