U.S. Under-20 men's national team head coach Marko Mitrović has named a 21-player roster for the upcoming U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The squad will feature a heavy MLS influence, with 16 of the 21 players coming from the North American top flight. San Diego FC provided the most players with three.
The squad does feature some well-known players based in Europe, including Barcelona goalkeeper Diego Kochen, Benfica defender Josh Wynder, Parma midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi and Borussia Dortmund winger Cole Campbell.
Constructing the roster was a tricky task for Mitrović, who had to negotiate with clubs over the release of players. With the tournament not taking place during a FIFA window, players who were released will miss games with their club teams.
“We are very excited about the group of players that will represent the United States at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile,” said Mitrović.
“Wearing your country’s crest in a World Cup is a special moment for every player and as a Federation, we’re proud that each player has developed through our American soccer pathway. We are grateful to the clubs that released their players in support of our mission and now our goal is to make our country proud.”
The U.S. will kick off the tournament on Sept. 29 against New Caledonia, before closing out group play against France (Oct. 2) and South Africa (Oct. 5). All three games will take place at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua, Chile.
The U.S. is the only nation to reach the quarterfinals of the last four U-20 World Cups.
