WASHINGTON — The House narrowly advanced a stopgap spending measure to extend government funding into November, overcoming the first hurdle to avoid a government shutdown later this month.

Lawmakers voted 217-212 mostly along party lines to pass the spending measure and punt the funding deadline until Nov. 21 while keeping spending levels at current levels. Only one Democrat joined mostly all Republicans in approving the bill, which also includes an additional $30 million in spending for lawmaker security.

All four members of Utah’s delegation voted for the bill.
